I am a founding board member, past board president, and the inaugural Executive Editor of The Owen News, Indiana's first and only nonprofit newspaper and the only nonprofit news outlet in Indiana specifically serving a rural community.
I have also served as a Public Relations consultant for an international non-profit working to promote indigenous language revitalization and as a Communications Coordinator for an Episcopal Cathedral.
I spent two years as a general assignment reporter for The Spencer Evening World in Spencer, Ind. During that time I was responsible for coverage of two town councils, the county council, the school corporation and several other specialty boards. I eventually served as the primary news reporter for the publication.
In addition to duties as a reporter, I have experience in pagination and photography. I am skilled in both breaking and soft news, features and investigative pieces. I am no stranger to filing FOIA requests, and I enjoy data-driven journalism.
I graduated from DePauw University in May 2016, where I majored in philosophy and discovered journalism. I am a former Editor-in-Chief of The DePauw, DePauw University's twice-weekly, student-run independent newspaper. The publication has since become a weekly newspaper. In 2013, I interned for The Salt Lake Tribune for 10-weeks as a reporter on the Communities and Features desks. I spent two Labor Day weekends (2014, 2015) in Florida homeless shelters, where I wrote, edited and took photos for the nation's second largest street paper, The Homeless Voice. I also spent a year as the Editor-in-Chief of DePauw University's branch of The Odyssey, a growing online media company with more than 600 branches.
After graduation, I worked for The Reporter-Times and The Mooresville-Decatur Times in Morgan County, Ind. There, I covered local government, social news and education. I also paginated all of the Mooresville-Decatur Times and pages as needed for The Reporter-Times. I left Martinsville to pursue full-time work as a page designer and copy editor for AIM Media Indiana's consolidated copy and design desk. There, I paginated eight to 10 pages a shift while editing live copy. I designed for The Columbus Republic, The Franklin Daily Journal, The Greenfield Daily Reporter and The Seymour Tribune.
I am adept in online curation, interactive storytelling tools, search engine optimization and management of social media sites including Facebook, Twitter, Hootsuite, Instagram, LinkedIn, Tout and Pinterest. I am capable of working in several content management sites such as TownNews/ BLOX, NewsEditPro and WordPress. I am proficient in the use of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Lightroom and Microsoft Office. I am capable of making multimedia projects including videos, photo slideshows and audio presentations using iMovie and Final Cut. I am especially interested in investigative, breaking news and features reporting.
I have won multiple journalism awards, including:
I am active within the journalism community through The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). I currently serve as Vice President of the National Board and will serve as the organization's President in the fall of 2026. I have served in various leadership positions with SPJ since 2016.
I have presented at professional conferences both as a student and a professional. I have also partnered with area schools to talk with youth about journalism, where news comes from and what it is like to be a daily reporter.
I am also a former ROI Grant Writing Fellow and a graduate of the Lilly Scholars' Network Leadership Academy.
In my spare time, I take on work as a freelance writer, photographer and designer.
